One of the longest-running models in motoring history, the
Morgan 4/4 made its debut way back in 1936 and remained in production right up
until 2018, retaining the same pre-war silhouette throughout this entire 82-year
period.
Introduced in 1982 to replace the long-running Kent engine, the
1597cc Ford CVH (Compound Valve angle Hemispherical) inline-four brought a
modern overhead cam layout to Morgan’s traditional lightweight
roadster.
Mated to Ford Sierra 5-speed manual transmission, the CVH 1.6
engine produced some 96bhp and while that may sound modest, the 4/4 weighed only
850kg thanks to its alloy-skinned body built over an ash wood frame and steel
ladder chassis. This low kerb weight ensured lively performance, crisp road
manners and a top speed nudging 100mph.
First registered in December
1984, this 4/4 has had just three owners from new, the first keeping it for 34
years and the second for six years (2019 – 2025). It is showing just under 53k
miles on the clock and while there is no early history with the car, there are a
good few bills from 2019 onwards for routine service items and new parts
fitted.
A classic car fanatic well-known to Brightwells, our vendor
acquired the Morgan as a gift for his daughter in the spring of last year,
but she has barely covered 300 miles in the car since and is now planning to
start a family so they have decided to pass the car on to someone who
can give it the more regular exercise it deserves.
As you can see in the
photos, this 4/4 looks exceptionally clean and tidy for a 42-year-old
with attractive silver paintwork, gleaming chrome wire wheels shod with a
matching set of Goodyear tyres, all with plenty of tread, and a commendably
smart interior.
Other equipment includes twin front spot lamps, wind
deflectors either side of the windscreen, spare wheel cover, battery cut-off
switch behind the seats and a Melvyn Rutter tool roll kit. There is also a full
set of weather gear (hood, sidescreens and tonneau cover) all in very good
condition, plus two sets of keys.
Driven some 50 miles to the sale, we
are told that it drives as well as it looks and it has certainly been starting
promptly and running beautifully as we have moved it around on site, with no
warning lights and healthy 50psi oil pressure.
Classed as a Historic
Vehicle on the V5C, it is free to tax and MOT-exempt, the last MOT being issued
in November 2024 which it passed with no advisories and it has only covered some
400 miles since, A Haynes manual for the CVH engine is also included so you can
do the servicing yourself.
On offer here at a modest guide
price, this light and lively Morgan will make a fun and frugal
runabout for someone over the remaining summer months.
