Original condition;
running and driving; recent clutch and shock absorber
overhaul
This charming 1935 Austin 10
Saloon is an honest and largely original example of this ever-popular pre-war
light saloon, finished in classic black over dark blue and showing a total of
eleven former keepers. Powered by the correct 1125cc engine, the car has been in
the current ownership since December 2022 and presents as a sound and usable
entry into vintage motoring.
Purchased from a Brightwells
auction just over three years ago for £3,000 plus fees as a non-runner from a
deceased estate, the Austin had been dry-stored and unused for approximately six
years prior to acquisition. Initial recommissioning involved removal, draining
and treatment of the fuel tank, after which the engine started readily and ran
smoothly. Further mechanical attention has included an overhaul of the rear
Hartford shock absorbers, refurbishment of the clutch to cure slipping,
replacement of leaking rear hub seals and relining of the rear brakes. The sump
was removed to allow internal inspection and cleaning, with everything found to
be in good order.
The car now runs, stops and
drives well, though there remains scope to fine-tune the brake balance and carry
out further adjustment to the dampers should the next owner wish. Overall
condition is fairly good and nicely original, making it perfectly suitable to be
enjoyed as it stands or gently improved according to personal taste. The fuel
gauge, previously operational, is currently inoperative again. The car starts,
stops and drives as expected, having been moved on site for photography and a
short video.
Documentation includes a buff
logbook covering the period from 1958 to 1968, along with some more recent
history. Ownership is supported by the excellent Austin Ten Drivers Club,
offering strong backup and spares availability, and insurance is notably
inexpensive. A delightful and practical vintage saloon with a straightforward
mechanical layout and plenty of character.
