Description
Current owner 30 years; under 15k miles on rebuilt engine;
unleaded head; recent gearbox rebuild; overdrive; well-maintained and in regular
use; very pretty in Mineral Blue
First seen in
1967, the MGC was BMC's attempt to plug the gap left in its range following the
demise of the Healey 3000, without having to go to too much trouble. Never
properly marketed by BMC, the MGC was quietly shelved in 1969 after just 8,999
examples had been built, half of them roadsters and half
GTs.
Nowadays though, because of these low
production numbers, the MGC is keenly sought after. With modern tyres and a few
subtle suspension tweaks the handling (which was originally criticised for being
a bit ‘front heavy’ compared to the MGB) can be transformed and, with a strong
and torquey engine, they make excellent high-speed cruisers.
First registered in November 1969, this GT looks most attractive in
Mineral Blue and has been in the current ownership since 1995. Always in regular
use, it was showing just under 50k miles when our vendor bought the car, a total
which has since risen to 72,650 miles.
A large
history file shows regular upkeep throughout our vendor’s 30-year ownership, the
main expenditure helpfully laid out in a spreadsheet on file. The engine was
fully rebuilt in 1998 (at 57,800 miles) with new pistons, liners, bearings,
lead-free cylinder head etc, electronic ignition also being fitted at the same
time.
Aside from regular servicing and waxoil
treatment, other highlights include a full respray in 2018; reconditioned
steering rack and suspension overhaul with various new bushes and new rear Spax
shocks also in 2018; gearbox rebuilt in 2019 with overdrive switch moved to the
gearstick; new front brake discs and pads in 2024.
Although it is MOT-exempt, it has been tested every year, the current
MOT being valid until October 2025 with just a few minor advisories, some of
which have been attended to including new seals to cure a slight oil leak from
the rear axle.
Always kept garaged in the current
ownership and used in fine weather only, this pampered MGC looks very smart both
above and below, with an agreed insurance value of £21,000.
We are told that it drives as well as it looks and it has
certainly been starting promptly and running well as we have moved it around on
site, with healthy 40psi oil pressure. Only reluctantly for sale due to the
advancing years of the vendor, it looks mighty tempting at the guide price
suggested.
