The 1990 Rover
Metro was announced to the world with one eye-catching word: 'Metromorphosis'.
It might have looked like the original 1980 Metro, but thanks to all-new
K-Series engines under the bonnet and modifications to the Hydragas suspension
which gave excellent handling, the new Metro emerged as a class-leading
supermini, winning What Car’s ‘Car of The Year’ accolade in
1991.
To drive, it really was a whole new ball
game, with sweet-spinning engines, magic carpet ride quality and Rover 200 seats
up front with a re-angled steering column for a big-car driving position. In
January 1995 the Metro was given its final facelift as the Rover 100, remaining
in production until European crash safety legislation finally killed it off for
good in December 1997.

Garage of Ryde on the Isle of Wight in April 1997, this Rover 100 Knightsbridge
has covered only 21,725 miles to date with an excellent service history
comprising 15 stamps, the last at 19,381 miles in April 2012 when the book runs
out of pages. That gives an average service interval of just 1,300 miles. There
are various invoices for subsequent upkeep although it doesn’t seem to have
needed much.
It has had just three owners from
new, the second of whom lived on the Isle of Wight and kept it from 1998 – 2014
when the current lady owner acquired it and brought it to mainland UK.
Powered by Rover’s 59bhp 1.1-litre K-Series
engine mated to 5-speed manual transmission, the Knightsbridge had a quoted top
speed of 96mph and 34mpg economy. It was available in some funky colours like
the Amaranth you see here with LGA trim (Luxury Grade A).
Seven old
MOTs show the mileage rising very slowly indeed in recent years, the current MOT
being valid until July 2025 with no advisories recorded.
As you can see in the photos, it looks to be in very good and highly
original condition with just a few minor bodywork blemishes here and there. It
has been starting promptly and running sweetly as we have moved it around on
site.
Any Metro is a rare sight these days and
your only dilemma with this low-mileage cracker will be whether to drive it or
tuck it away as an investment…
