Description
Handsome 420 manual with O/D boasting an interesting history file
including some race history!
Dating from April 1967, this
really rather handsome Jaguar 420 saloon is finished in titanium grey (Aston
Martin Pennine Grey perhaps?) and features the 4.2 litre straight-six cylinder
engine with twin carbs. Good for a claimed 245Bhp at the time driving the rear
wheels here via manual transmission with overdrive.
Inside, we find a
lovely blue leather interior showing some nice, time-worn patina that only years
of gentle use can achieve along with the traditional burr walnut dash, array of
instrumentation and matching blue carpets.
The history file includes a
two page potted history of the car, which suggests this particular 420 has led a
rather colourful life, including a stint of time on track,
racing!
Understood to have been
supplied new via Henlys Ltd of London through J R Inwards of Ruislip, where it
spent its first six years before moving to Herefordshire. It
was eventually discovered again sat hiding under a tarpaulin in a barn
by a soldier training on maneuvers, who later purchased the
car.
In 1994, the car was again
purchased and treated to restoration by Mr Whyte, a chap into Classic Saloon
racing. He duly had this 420 prepared for such endeavors racing the car
throughout the UK. The car was then
sold to his good friend Mr Barnes, who had accompanied him on many occasions
racing, and was a well known Jaguar Specialist and builder of classic Jags near
Winchester.
Mr Barnes set about
re-commissioning the 420 for road use but unfortunately died in 2011 before this was completed. The car’s race history only came about
when Whyte jumped out in front of the owner at Goodwood with the exclamation
“you’re driving my car!” - it
turned out it was the car Whyte wished he had never
sold.
The car passed to our vendor
last summer, but health problems have meant it hasn’t seen as much use as hoped
so it is reluctantly for sale now.
The history file includes the
V5C, Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate showing the car was originally
supplied in April 1967 finished in Opalescent Blue with dark blue trim, copy old V5C, 8 old MOTs
and number of more historic bills for parts and
maintenance.
A lovely example with a
colourful history with the appealing 4.2 litre engine and manual transmission
with overdrive.
