Description
Iconic American trailer; fully kitted out for glamping; loads of
potential; would make a great office in the garden, mobile cafe or Airbnb
perhaps - you decide; cooler than a cool thing!
The iconic
Airstream caravan owes its origins to Hawley Bowlus, the American aircraft
designer most famous for his work on Charles Lindbergh’s ‘Spirit of St Louis’
aeroplane which made the first non-stop flight from New York to Paris in 1927.
He also designed a luxury travel trailer called the Bowlus Road Chief and in
1936 Wally Byam founded Airstream to mass produce copies of this vehicle from a
factory in Ohio.
With its distinctive, polished
aluminium sausage-shape, the Airstream has come to symbolise the ‘American
Dream’, also becoming increasingly popular with all manner of mobile burger bars
and trendy pop-up shops.
Dating from 1962, this
Airstream Overlander has been in the current ownership for the last 10 years and
was regularly used for the first seven years to take the family of four to
festivals and for camping trips in the New Forest. Unused for the last three
years, the owner has now decided the time has come to pass it
on.
It has plenty of space for four and
comfortable sleeping arrangements, with two separate single beds in the rear and
one main double bed in the front. It has a well-equipped kitchen with a cooker,
grill, oven and sink, as well as a separate shower and hand washbasin. Other
features include a pop-up dining table, central heating, water tank, 12v
lighting and a CD player/radio. It also has a mains hook-up, making it easy to
connect to electricity.
There is no limit
to the uses that these gorgeous trailers can be put, from garden offices to
lucrative holiday accommodation, some firms charging up to £5,000 a week to hire
them out as Airbnb’s. This Overlander looks mighty tempting at the modest guide
price suggested.
