Description
Known as 'Ade the Amazon' ; looks great in Graphite Grey with a
red interior; twin-carb overdrive model; much recent expenditure; driven 30
miles to the sale; lots to like!
Supplied new via
Cameron Motors of Scone in Perthshire, this Volvo 122S was first owned by a Mr
Hill of Methven. He looked after the car meticulously, the original service book
showing 15 stamps up to 32,480 miles in September 1977, an average service
interval of under 2,200 miles.
The next 40 years
of the car’s life are not recorded but by 2020 it was owned by a gent in
Aberdeen (the car’s 7th owner) who seems to have restored the car
including some localised bodywork repairs, new lights and trim parts, new screen
rubbers, new carpets plus numerous mechanical parts, all detailed in invoices on
file.
Our vendor acquired the car a year ago and
describes it as follows:
“Affectionately
known as ‘Ade the Amazon’ by my family, this 122S four-door saloon has a high
spec including: Code 80 Graphite Grey paint; 1,778cc OHV 4-cyl engine with twin
SU HS6 carburettors; 4-speed manual transmission with factory fitted overdrive;
front disc brakes with rear drums; brake servo; fully carpeted flooring; front
seat belts; FM/DAB/USB/Aux retro-style head unit with hidden twin speakers;
two-speed wipers and electric washers; two-speed heater; spare wheel with
original jack; 5 x radial Vredestein tyres; Simonz sports exhaust system;
electronic ignition; polished rocker cover; halogen headlamps; auxiliary driving
lamps plus reverse lamp.
The B18 engine
fires up easily from cold and settles down to a quiet tick-over off choke. Out
on the road, the engine pulls very well and keeps up at modern-day speeds. The
gearbox selects all gears easily and smoothly, albeit with a fair ‘throw’ on the
gearstick! It cruises along comfortably at 70mph (or more…) thanks to the
factory overdrive which also goes in and out correctly. The servo-assisted
brakes pull the car to a stop cleanly, and the steering is nice and
direct.
Externally, the car is in good
shape with Graphite Grey paint. It has had some restoration work carried out by
previous owners over the years, including a respray at some point to a good
standard – it polishes up very well indeed. There are a few small
scratches/marks as to be expected with age. The brightwork is pitted in places,
but still has a good lustre.
Underneath,
the car has had some metalwork over the years to repair areas of corrosion. We
have recently completed some further repairs including a new front outrigger and
inner-wing return, plus many hours spent stripping off the old tar-like
underseal, cleaning off and treating all the surface corrosion beneath with
Jenolite. It was then re-undersealed with quality Dinitrol to protect if for
years to come.
The running gear has had
much money spent on it too, including four new adjustable Gaz dampers. The rear
axle has had a ‘birthday’ including new wheel bearings, inner and outer hub
seals, shoes, differential pinion seal and all suspension bushings replaced with
polyurethane items. The front suspension has had new anti-roll bar links and
bushes, the front calipers cleaned and re-sealed, plus new brake disc hubs with
wheel bearings.
The interior is nicely
original and was treated to a new set of red wool carpets by the previous owner
(a retired trimmer). The seats are very supportive, the front two have a couple
of splits from age on their right-hand sides, the rear is in excellent condition
and is very comfortable. The headlining has a couple of small holes behind the
driver’s sun visor and one to the right of where the driver’s head is. The
dashboard top has been renewed fairly recently, and all dials and electrics are
working correctly including the capillary temperature gauge (recently new), dash
light dimmer, courtesy lamp and map light. We replaced the original valve radio
with a period-looking Autosound DAB
radio with USB/Aux inputs for your phone etc, plus a dual-voice speaker
replacing the original behind the parcel shelf. The heater is still typically
furnace like which is great for winter motoring!
The car has an MOT until June 2025 with just one advisory for a
minor oil leak and the odometer reads 35,270 miles (presumably 135…). It also
comes with a good history file including manuals, receipts etc, plus a second
set of keys. The original jack is present, plus there are some parts with it
including the original rubber floor matting if you wish to keep it original. Ade
is only reluctantly being sold because I have now acquired a later 2.0 two-door
Amazon that I have been after for a while.”
Starting promptly and running well as we have moved him around on
site, Ade is a handsome beast who has been fairly described by the vendor.
Driven 30 miles to the sale, he now needs a caring new owner who can reap the
rewards of all the work so recently carried out.
