Description
Cool and capable G-Wagen; ex-Singapore army; open-top variant with
seats in the back showing 3,260km; 24v batteries
Dating from July 1990 and originally supplied to the Singapore
Military this rather cool looking W461 series Mercedes G-Wagen comes to us in
G240 Diesel form, finished in Olive green with fabric doors and open
top.
Under the bonnet, we find the OM616.938
four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine which develops 71Bhp from its
2,399cc unit .
Interestingly, the W461 series was
not commercially available with the OM616 2.4 litre diesel engine, but the
military variants do not seem to follow convention, however a letter on file
from Mercedes dated January 2021 confirms the spec of the
truck.
Starting with a (24v) jump, the truck ran
well and moved around with ease looking like an interesting alternative to the
usual Land Rover branded competition with the G-Wagen’s proven on and off-road
abilities and rugged looks of this ex-military version.
There’s scope to make some improvements to this one, having failed
the last MOT in 2021, although there’s nothing really on the failures to give
too many sleepless nights for those with the right skills, and once complete,
its worth noting similar trucks in very good order have
made around £20,000 at auction.
The
history file includes the V5C showing one former UK keeper to our vendor, the
aforementioned letter from MB UK, Bill of Lading from Asia to UK in October 2020
and some customs info.
An interesting example
with loads of scope that could no doubt climb every mountain and ford every
stream.
