This
delightful 1928 Ford Model A 24hp Phaeton is believed to have spent most of its
life in sunny Australia, being imported to the UK in 1997. For the next 23 years
it was owned by a VSCC member in Lewes who had the car substantially restored
between 2013 and 2016.
The bills on file for
this period amount to some £10,000 and include: full brake system overhaul with
many new parts; complete overhaul of the electrics; distributor rebuilt; new
headlights; carburettor rebuilt; gearbox overhaul; new uprated clutch; fuel
system overhaul; all 26 grease nipples replaced; spoked road wheels rebuilt plus
much else besides.
We are told that the car was
then only lightly used before the owner became unable to drive and the car was
put on display in a museum near Brighton. When the owner passed away the car was
offered for sale by The Motor Shed at Bicester Heritage which is when our vendor
acquired it in 2020.
Over the next couple of
years our vendor treated the car to a complete body-off restoration with the
spectacular results you see today. Although there are no bills to show exactly
what was done, there are a few photos of the work in progress which show that it
was an extremely thorough job and the car speaks for itself.
The chassis and running gear was all stripped,
cleaned and powder coated or painted. The body was stripped to bare metal and
repainted in blue and all the brightwork was replated as required. All
mechanical parts were refurbished as required including the fitment of a new
uprated water pump and new wheel bearings. The interior was completely retrimmed
with new seat covers and carpets and a new hood was fitted. A travel trunk was
fitted to the back to provide useful additional luggage space. A new set of
tyres and inner tubes were also fitted along with a new Henry Ford Flying Quail
radiator mascot.
As you can see in the photos, the car now looks
absolutely stunning and is as good underneath as it us up top. Starting promptly
and running well as we have moved it around on site, this is one of the
nicest Model As we have ever offered and needs to be seen to be fully
appreciated.
