1960 BMW R50 & Steib S350 Sidecar
Recently recommissioned following many years on static display;
previous owner 35 years
This R50 was
first registered in Stockport in May 1960. A green logbook shows that it was in
Hull throughout the 1970s while an old style V5 shows that it had one owner in
Wigan from 1981 – 2016. Our vendor acquired the bike via Brightwells in 2016 at
which point it was in need of recommissioning following many years on static
display, the last MOT and tax disc being issued in 1982 when the mileage was
6,615.
It has since been sympathetically
refurbished by the vendor with assistance from Bowbury Engineering & Motor
Works of Derby (BEMW) with many new parts and bills on file for over £2,600.
This included a complete new exhaust system; carburettor rebuilt; dampers
overhauled; new rear springs; new throttle cables; new foot rest rubbers; full
service; CTEK trickle charger connection etc. It retains its original
engine and is said to be in good running order, the odometer now showing 6,694
miles.
The Steib S350 single seat sidecar dates
from 1938 and has also been lightly restored with a new seat, passenger step,
screen/apron, steering damper and brightwork rechromed as required. Despite the
Art Deco looks of the sidecar, it was still being listed in the Steib catalogue
as late as 1955 (photocopy on file) and in combination with the R50 it still
looks right today, the vendor reporting that the whole outfit handles very
nicely.
