1998 Maserati Quattroporte MkIV
Extremely rare
RHD 3.2 V8 Ottocilindri; four owners, the current for 12 years; impeccable
service history; new stainless steel exhaust; a lovely example in all
respects
Maserati launched its first Quattroporte
back in 1963 and has continued to make a version of this luxury four-door sports
saloon ever since. The fourth generation model came out in 1994 and was the
first Maserati to be produced under new owners Fiat, who had bought this
illustrious Italian marque from Alejandro de Tomaso in 1993.
An evolution of the Biturbo platform, the Quattroporte IV was
styled by Marcello Gandini (of Lamborghini Miura and Countach fame) and featured
his signature slashed rear wheel arch design which had first been seen on the
Countach and later on the Maserati Shamal. Initially powered by the 280bhp
twin-turbo 24-valve 2.8 V6 from the Ghibli, the Quattroporte IV got the flagship
Shamal engine in 1996, a 336bhp twin-turbo 3.2 V8 which gave it blistering
performance – 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 168mph. A Getrag 6-speed
manual gearbox came as standard, but a more town-friendly ZF 4-speed automatic
was also available as an option.
Supplied new
by Meridien Modena of Hampshire, this Quattroporte Ottocilindri 3.2 V8 was first
registered in Guernsey in January 1998. Finished in Verde Foresta with a
magnolia hide interior and automatic transmission, it has covered 80,700 miles
to date in the hands of just four owners with an excellent service history
comprising 22 stamps in the book, the last at 80,463 miles in October 2021,
giving an average service interval of 3,700 miles – pretty impressive by any
standards.
Serviced 10 times by Meridien up to
52,230 miles in 2008 (and once by Maranello Sales and once by a specialist), all
subsequent servicing has been done by The Maserati Shed of Fareham (formerly
known as Roberts Aerospace & Automotive). The cambelt was last changed at
76,628 miles in 2016. A thick file of invoices document all of the upkeep over
the years, recent expenditure of note including all four wheels being
refurbished in 2017 and the fitment of a custom-made stainless steel exhaust in
2018.
Our vendor acquired the car in 2010 and
has covered 24,000 trouble-free miles in it since, including tours of the Alps
and the Italian lakes, stating that “it is quite the nicest car I have owned”.
He also states that only 415 Ottocilindri models were built of which only around
70 were RHD and that he has never encountered another during his 12-year
ownership.
Supplied with an MOT until September
2022 with just two minor advisories (handbrake weak; rear brake disc
worn/pitted), it also comes with all its original handbooks in the original
leather wallet plus an indoor car cover.
A true
modern classic, this rare and impeccably maintained Maserati is in super
condition throughout and looks excellent value at the modest guide price
suggested.
