1966 Ford Cortina Mk I GT Replica
Mild rally
prep and FIA papers; LHD import from Finland; money spent; driven to the
sale
If you are looking for some serious fun and games, this '66
Cortina Mk1 looks a promising bet.
The car arrived from Finland in
February 2019, in its current state of rally prep. The accompanying FIA papers
tell us all we know about the car.
Its VIN suggests it was built in
August 1966 in Dagenham, although the V5c lists it as a 1967 car. It is, as you
can see, LHD and is a two door, so ideal for futher conversion into a full-on
Rally or Race car. The FIA Technical Passport states its category is Competition
Touring Car.
Its FIA Passport is valid until 2028 so you have time to get
it thoroughly sorted and it is built to a 1965 Specification according to the
paperwork. The car is pretty standard bar the Weber carburettor and electric
fuel pump and the engine is listed as a 1965 unit with 1,498cc.
When our
vendor got it, it was fitted with a high lift cam which had damaged one of the
followers. His local garage replaced this with a standard item and the car was
driven to the sale. They also gave it a brake overhaul with new cylinders and
shoes and some work to the gearbox and an oil change - the bill totalling
£1,365.
A change of plans has meant the car is now up for grabs. It will
need some further developement and work before it becomes competitive, but the
shell looks like a sound basis from which to work and is probably worth the
catalogue estimate on its own.
It comes with a set of alloy wheels fitted
with studded tyres in the boot, although we are advised that the wheels, or the
studs will need modification before they will fit. There are also new window
rubbers supplied but not yet fitted.
This is a car that can be used as
is, improved over time, or form an excellent basis of a ground up build into a
highly competitive package for classic rallying or Touring Car
racing.
