Lot Ended
Description
1953 Lagonda 2.6-litre Sports Saloon
AMENDMENT;
Rare Tickford-bodied two-door model; one of only around 70 made and
perhaps a dozen surviving; interesting project with lots of potential;
from a deceased estate
Bidders are advised that the engine number would suggest this is a
2.6-litre and not a 3-litre as originally catalogued.
This
1953 Tickford-bodied Lagonda is almost a sister car to the one we offered in our
September sale and is well known to the Lagonda club. It comes from a deceased
estate with sadly little in the way of history as is often the case in such
circumstances.
The
vendor has been unable to locate any documents, so it is being sold just as you
see here, although the registration number NXU 302 is still recognised on the
DVLA database so it should be a simple process for its new owner to obtain a
replacement V5C.
The
DVLA indicate that it was re-registered in 1999, which suggests to us that this
is when it was restored. A card inside shows that it was the ‘DB Class Winner’
at the 1999 100th Anniversary Lagonda Club Concours which was no mean
achievement, although the car has deteriorated somewhat over the last 21
years.
Last
taxed in 2010, we are told that it suffered a head gasket problem and the owner
decided to remove the engine to dismantle for inspection. As can be seen, the
engine and gearbox are still out of the car. The block retains its pistons,
rods, crank and oil pump and the head is present, as are the carburettors, sump,
cams and cam boxes– there are also a significant quantity of spare parts
included.
Much
of the coachwork remains in sound condition and the leather upholstery would
respond very well to some feeding and cleaning. The car will need a
comprehensive recommissioning once the engine has been checked over and fitted,
but it all looks straightforward and as far as the vendor is aware, the car is
complete.
The
grille has taken a battering but could be restored with care - a few days
hard graft would transform this Lagonda into something quite
presentable.
Being
offered here as a straightforward restoration project, this exceedingly rare and
handsome sporting saloon should amply reward the remedial works now
required.
