Series III
pickup; upgraded with 300Tdi engine and rebuilt gearbox; galvanised chassis;
combines classic styling with dependable diesel power
Introduced in
1971, the Land Rover Series III was the final and most developed version of the
long-running Series Land Rover line, retaining the rugged simplicity and
exceptional off-road ability that had made the model famous around the world.
Built for agricultural, military and export use alike, the Series III became one
of the most recognisable utility vehicles of its era. While most were supplied
as hard-tops or station wagons, pickup versions were produced in smaller numbers
and are now considered particularly desirable, combining traditional Land Rover
looks with added practicality and rarity.
This very tidy example,
presented in the classic Land Rover colour combination of blue and white, has
been made even more practical and usable having been fitted with the highly
regarded 300Tdi engine. Well known for its robust, simple and durable design,
this popular conversion enhances the qualities for which the Series Land Rover
is appreciated, while making the vehicle far more suited to modern
use.
In addition to the engine conversion, the vehicle benefits from a
fully galvanised chassis, one of the most sought-after upgrades on any Series
Land Rover, ensuring long-term durability and making the most of the upgraded
drivetrain. Further improvements include LED lighting (aside from the
original-style headlights, which help retain the truck’s familiar face), along
with notes on file for replacement brakes, shock absorbers and parabolic
springs.
In keeping with its working heritage, the paintwork presents
well while remaining suitably usable, complemented by chequer-plate protection
and upgraded steel wheels fitted with appropriate all-terrain tyres.
Refreshingly, the pickup bed has not been over-restored, allowing the next owner
to use the vehicle as intended without concern, while provisions for a towbar
are also present for those wishing to put the truck to work.
Inside,
additional soundproofing has been fitted to improve refinement on longer
journeys, along with new seat covers and a centre console supplied by well-known
Land Rover specialist Britpart, adding further comfort and
practicality.
The vendor informs us that much of the work was carried out
by a Land Rover specialist, with a large bundle of invoices present for parts
and labour, including the fitment of the galvanised chassis, amounting to a
substantial sum.
The odometer currently shows 12,699 miles, however the
mileage of the replacement engine at the time of installation in 2019 is not
recorded, so interested parties should satisfy themselves accordingly.
In
summary, a very smart and highly usable Series III pickup in a desirable body
style, benefiting from sensible and costly upgrades including the 300Tdi
conversion and galvanised chassis. With the expensive work already completed,
this is a classic Land Rover ready to be enjoyed, while remaining more than
capable of returning to work if required.
