Long regarded as the flagship of the
Mercedes-Benz range, the S-Class has always represented the
point at which Stuttgart throws its full weight behind refinement, engineering
depth and quiet authority. The facelifted W220 models benefitted from improved
build quality, cleaner styling and a level of comfort that few contemporaries
could match. Even today, a well-preserved example remains an
immensely satisfying place to spend time, combining effortless performance with
that unmistakable sense of calm competence that defined Mercedes at their
best.
This 2004
S320 CDI, supplied new by Mercedes-Benz Swansea and retained by its
mature first owner ever since, is a particularly appealing example. Having
covered just 53,093 miles from new, it presents with the sort of originality and
careful upkeep that is becoming increasingly rare. The overall condition
suggests a car that has been used sparingly and looked after
properly.
The
interior is especially impressive. The full black leather remains supple and
clean, with no undue wear and that distinctive Mercedes aroma that only
well-kept hides seem to retain. The rear
seats appear barely used, and the cabin has never been smoked in. Switchgear,
trim and carpets all present extremely well, reflecting the low mileage and
careful ownership.
A modern head unit has been fitted in place of
the original COMMAND system, chosen specifically to blend with the factory
appearance. It now offers DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity, updated navigation
and music streaming, while preserving the car’s overall originality and
ambience.
Equipment levels are generous, including heated
and electrically adjustable front seats, air suspension, front and rear parking
sensors, electric folding mirrors, double-glazed windows, soft-close boot lid, electric
tilt-and-slide sunroof, alloy wheels with
matching Michelin tyres and the original, untouched first-aid kit.
The vendor informs us that on the
road, this S-Class performs exactly as one hopes.
The 3.2-litre OM648 straight-six turbodiesel is widely regarded
as the pick of the range, offering smooth, effortless power delivery with
commendable economy. The automatic gearbox shifts almost imperceptibly, and the
air suspension provides the sort of ride quality that made the S-Class the benchmark of its era.
There are no unwanted noises, rattles or creaks; instead, it moves with the
quiet confidence of a car that has been maintained correctly and never
abused.
The
service history is fully up to date, the most recent service carried out just
203 miles ago at 52,890. Recent expenditure includes a new battery along with
new front brake discs and pads. The current advisory free MOT certificate is
valid till January 2027.
The perfect luxury vehicle for any
occasion.
