1973 Range Rover Classic Two-Door

Lovely B-Suffix two-door; PAS; overdrive; fast appreciating asset

There is a simple elegance to the original two-door 1970 Range Rover that makes the current generation of luxury off-roaders appear absurdly overblown by comparison. Designed by Spen King, it’s boxy, minimalist yet perfectly proportioned form was so fundamentally 'right' from the outset that it remained in production virtually unaltered for the next 25 years.

Early examples had basic, utilitarian interiors with vinyl seats and plastic dashboards that were designed to be washed down with a hose. Features such as power assisted steering, carpeted floors, air conditioning, cloth/leather seats and wooden interior trim were only fitted later, when it was realised that it had a far larger market as a luxury vehicle than merely as a more comfortable alternative to the Land Rover Station Wagon.

This late 1973 B-Suffix was purchased about 14 years ago from a gentleman in Tregaron. It was essentially very sound, but some restoration work was carried out, including fitting a pair of NOS doors sourced from South Africa.

More improvements included a brake overhaul and new front discs, and it was also fitted with a mechanical overdrive – a useful addition as early Rangie’s were rather under-geared. There are no bills for this work but it certainly appears to be a running, diving and very good looking machine. The last MOT passed with no advisories back in 2017, showing 63,485 miles and it has only covered about 20 miles since.

This sympathetically restored, well finished and nicely original example looks a steal at the suggested guide price and would make the perfect shooting accessory or super-cool vehicle for the school run or clambering to the top of that mountain.
