Offered here is a rare and
increasingly collectible 1997 BMW 840Ci Auto (E31), powered by the desirable
4.4-litre M62 V8 engine producing 282bhp and paired with a 5-speed automatic
transmission. Finished in blue, this is one of the later non-Nikasil M62-engined
cars, with production figures suggesting that little more than 3,000 examples
were built, making it one of the rarer variants of BMW's flagship grand
tourer.
First registered in June 1997,
the car has had just four former keepers and has been in the current ownership
since October 2008. Affectionately known as "Linda", the BMW spent much of its
life with a meticulous long-term owner before being exported to Jersey in 2011,
where it remained until being repatriated to the UK earlier this year. The
original UK registration, P26 ACN, is currently being reapplied for with the
DVLA using the appropriate documentation. The odometer now displays 116,480
miles.
The vendor has known both the
car and its previous owner for over 20 years and spent several years searching
for "Linda" before eventually discovering her stored in a dry Herefordshire barn
under a quality car cover. During almost two decades, the car covered fewer than
30,000 miles. Although the comprehensive history file from Browns BMW of
Hereford was unfortunately lost during the move to Jersey, the original BMW
toolkit remains complete and unused.
Over the past two years the
car has been sympathetically recommissioned regardless of cost. Work has
included a full service with new spark plugs, air filter, oil and filter,
servicing of the braking system, replacement front lower suspension arm bushes,
new fuel pump, internal fuel tank clean, renewal of all fluids, sports catalytic
converters and repairs to the exhaust system. The underside, sills and
vulnerable areas have been cleaned, inspected and extensively treated with
Waxoyl, with no corrosion found. Minor paintwork improvements, a full valet and
detailing have also been completed.
The BMW passed its MOT in July
2026 with no advisories, reflecting the care taken during recommissioning. With
its desirable non-Nikasil V8, fascinating ownership story, careful preservation
and extensive recent expenditure, this rare E31 represents an outstanding
opportunity to acquire one of BMW's most iconic grand tourers, a model widely
regarded as one of the marque's finest modern
classics.
