Description
In the current family ownership for over 50 years; fully restored in
2013 and lightly used since; reconditioned gearbox; nice transferable number; a
thoroughly rejuvenated Series One that drives very nicely indeed
First registered in
Gloucestershire in April 1955, this Series One 86” 2.0 petrol engine Land Rover
has been in the current family ownership for over 50 years but was barn-stored
for much of that time.
In 2011 our vendor decided the
time had finally come to get it back on the road and over the next three years
he gradually brought it back to life, retaining as much originality as possible.
The full extent of the work carried out is far too detailed to list in full
here, but is amply covered in dozens of parts invoices file.
It included new chassis members as required; new bulkhead sections;
full brake, steering and suspension overhaul with many new parts; new propshaft;
diff rebuilt; new exhaust and manifold; new wiring; new door and tailgate seals;
new indicators; new coil; new clutch kit; new water pump; new sliding windows
and window felts; refurbished wheels and new tyres and a repaint in Bronze
Green.
The engine was also thoroughly
overhauled and the gearbox was refurbished by Central Axle Services of
Birmingham at a cost of £750. The interior was also tidied up and the seats were
re-covered.
Only lightly used since the
restoration was completed, it was treated to another £1,500 of new parts earlier
this year, including
a new canvas tilt, new carb, new SU electronic fuel pump, new
distributor and voltage regulator.
We are told that it drives
very well and we were certainly impressed with the way it went when we took it
for a spin around our large 10-acre site. It feels notably nippy for a Series
One with a sweet engine, a smooth gearchange and the steering is so light and
direct we thought at first it must have power steering, although it seems to be
down to lots of new parts and proper set-up of the
geometry.
As you can see in the photos,
it looks to be in great shape for a 71-year-old workhorse and will be a handy
bit of kit to have around.
The icing on the cake is the
original Gloucester-issue number plate, PDD 207, which is transferable according
to the V5C, and doubtless has a value of its own, especially to anyone who owns
a Peugeot 207…
