Offered from long-term family
ownership, this 1972 MGB GT presents an appealing opportunity to acquire a
highly original chrome-bumper example with excellent provenance and considerable
potential.
The car has remained within the vendor's family
since 1978 and has been registered in his name for the past 30 years. During
much of that time it has been kept in dry storage, helping to preserve the car
but inevitably leading to the need for recommissioning before returning to the
road.
With the intention of preparing the car for sale, a
local retired mechanic has recently carried out a number of essential
recommissioning tasks. These include fitting four new tyres, flushing the fuel
system, installing a new fuel pump, supplying fresh fuel and converting the
electrical system from the original twin six-volt batteries to a single new
12-volt battery. As a result, the MGB now runs and has been driven to
Brightwells under its own power.
While mechanically showing encouraging signs, the
car should still be regarded as a restoration and recommissioning project. The
bodywork displays numerous cosmetic imperfections, as clearly illustrated in the
accompanying photographs, while the interior would also benefit from complete
refurbishment to return it to its former glory.
At the time
of cataloguing, no paperwork accompanies the vehicle. The vendor is in the
process of applying for a replacement V5C, although this may not be available
before the auction, in which case the successful purchaser will need to obtain
one.
With over four decades of family ownership, honest
originality and a solid basis for sympathetic restoration, this MGB GT
represents a rewarding project and an excellent opportunity to return another
classic Abingdon-built sports car to regular enjoyment.
