Motorcycles announced the post-war range of AJS and Matchless heavyweight
singles in June 1945. Coded Model 16 and G3L respectively, the two 350cc OHV
models shared the same 93mm stroke as their bigger 500cc brethren, coupled to a
69mm bore, with a Burman four-speed gearbox.
Housed in a rigid frame
with Teledraulic front forks, from 1950 the G3L gained swing-arm rear suspension
with ‘Jampot’ shock absorbers, these models being designated the G3LS.
Evolved directly from the rugged G3L used by
British forces during World War II, the G3LS combined military-grade durability
with refined civilian comfort. Pushing out roughly 16hp, it was not designed for
high-speed racing – its heavy flywheel delivered satisfying low-end grunt, a
steady rhythm and stalwart dependability.
First
registered in Belfast in July 1955, this splendid G3LS has had just three owners
from new, according to the V5C, the first keeping it right up until 2011. Our
vendor acquired the bike in 2017 in a fully restored state, the work carried out
to the bike being detailed in notes from a previous owner (see last
two photos).
The owner of a small collection of classic
motorcycles, our vendor has ridden the Matchless regularly during
his nine-year ownership, taking it to various shows, and tells us that it rides
very well and has always been totally reliable, completing the odd 100+
mile journey without drama.
As you can see
in the photos, the restoration was carried out to a high standard and
this handsome machine would grace any collection.
The icing on the cake
is the original TZ 7634 number plate, which is transferable according to the
V5C, and doubtless has a value of its own - especially to anyone fortunate
enough to own a 1960s Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ or a 1990s Toyota Supra
TZ...
Please note: The V5C erroneously states
the gearbox number (GB28F55) as the engine number which is in fact 55/G3LS29335.
Both units are believed to be original to the bike.
