This delightfully
characterful 1965 Fiat 500, affectionately known as “Roberta,” is offered here
with wonderful period charm and an engaging ownership story. Finished in light
grey and presented in left-hand drive, this largely original example was
imported to the UK from Italy prior to its purchase in 2009 and retains
fascinating traces of its Italian life, including accompanying paperwork and
original-style tax discs.
Powered by the
quintessential 500cc engine, Roberta delivers the pure, back-to-basics motoring
experience for which these cars are so fondly regarded. While modest in outright
performance — cruising comfortably at around 45mph — the car excels as a joyful
companion for local runs, Sunday pub trips, and relaxed countryside drives. An
upgraded electronic ignition has been fitted to improve reliability, while the
simple choke-and-starter lever setup remains part of the authentic driving
experience.
Importantly, the car has been
preserved with an emphasis on originality rather than concours perfection.
Notable features include the charming cream Bakelite steering wheel, complete
with period cracking, original-style fittings, and a correct chrome number plate
light replacement. The indicator stalk remains unreplaced due to only plastic
reproductions being available at the time, reflecting the careful and
sympathetic approach to its upkeep. Maintenance was supported by a Fiat 500
specialist in Middle Barton when required.
Roberta’s appeal lies in her honest patina and the unmistakable smile
she brings to drivers and onlookers alike. Known for attracting waves and
thumbs-up wherever she travelled, this Fiat embodies the spirit of the classic
500: simple, sociable, and full of personality.
The car was once owned by Darren Turner, the highly decorated British
professional racing driver and long-standing works driver for Aston Martin
Racing, a partnership spanning more than two decades. He is best known as a
three-time class winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (2007, 2008, and
2017).
Sold in 2016 to the current vendor, the
car has been dry-stored since. It starts and runs as expected for photography
and video purposes; however, the starter motor can occasionally stick, most
likely due to lack of regular use.
In summary,
this is a wonderfully honest and endearing mid-sixties Fiat 500, presented in
usable, well-loved condition. Roberta represents everything that makes these
tiny Italian classics so beloved: simplicity, nostalgia, and pure driving
charm.
