Rare close ratio gearbox model; spare alloy
fuel tank; rare British trials machine
A very scarce example of the late-production Cotton Cavalier, this
1973 machine represents one of the final motorcycles to leave the Gloucester
factory before Cotton ceased large-scale production in the 1970s.
Following the loss of Villiers engine supply after BSA’s acquisition of the brand, Cotton
adopted Italian power units for the last Cavaliers, making these late bikes
particularly unusual.
Approximately 250 Cavaliers were produced in
total, the majority in 170cc form. The 220cc variant offered here is one of only
a handful known and is further distinguished by its close-ratio gearbox, confirmed by the
“CR” stamp on the engine casing
— a specification associated with
machines supplied to Cotton’s works riders for events such as
the Scottish Six Days Trial.
The fitted fuel tank has been fully refurbished
and remains dry. Also included is a second tank, cleverly modified with an
internal aluminum liner.
A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most
uncommon and interesting British twin-shock trials machines of the
period.
