Appealing high spec example showing 96,000 miles with good history file; LPG kit fitted; scope for minor cosmetic improvements

Supplied new by Henlys (London) Ltd Jaguar Centre of Hendon, London in November 1992 this later model XJ40 generation of XJ6 comes to us in desirable, higher spec Sovereign Spec and was driven 60 miles to the sale.

Finished in burgundy, the car sits on its original five-spoke 16inch alloy wheels and benefits from a tow bar and electrics fitted at the rear.

Under the bonnet, we find the proven 3.2 litre AJ6 inline six cylinder engine producing around 200bhp driving the rear wheels via four-speed ZF 4HP22 automatic transmission.

Inside, as a Sovereign spec model we find leather/vinyl interior piped burgundy, wood trim, air conditioning, six-speaker sound system, headlamp washers, electric seats, heated rear window, original radio/cassette player and on-board trip computer.

The car shows 96,077 miles, which the interior looks to have worn well, although the usual head-lining sag has been remedied with some pins to support it.  Outside, there are some signs of age to the body and paintwork as expected with an XJ40 of this age, along with signs of previous paint repairs as pictured.

The car looks to have been fitted with an LPG/autgas system fitted by Mugglestone Jaguar of Boston, Lincs with tank in the boot.

The history file includes the V5C revealing five former keepers to our vendor who has enjoyed the car for the last two years, the service book which records 13 stamps (of which all look to be main agents), the last being in January 2002 at 72,916 miles.

Furthermore, the file also includes a couple of old log books, four old MOTs, the current MOT valid until October 2023 which recorded three minor advisories for corroded coil springs, slight play in front wheel bearings and a worn front brake disc.

The file includes a selection of invoices including for recent work undertaken including a rebuilt steering rack and hydro-elastic bushes to address the typical ‘wandering steering’ XJ40’s can suffer from, a £478 service in November 2020, new battery in October 2022, new fuel pump in May 2022, £705 spent on air con condenser, drier and compressor in October 2021, refurbished aircon heater motor in July 2021 and also the LPG conversion and service in July 2021 at a cost of some £2,118.

Ready to be enjoyed, the car looks like enticing value with useful recent works that might cost less to run that you’d imagine given the Autogas conversion.  Address the minor cosmetic flaws and this XJ40 could prove a shrewd investment. On offer at No Reserve, the highest bid takes this example home.
